SABRE-TOOTHED tigers paved the way for early humans to invade Europe, say palaeontologists in Spain. Sabre-tooths left plenty of flesh on their kills, according to Paul Palmqvist of the University of Málaga. Early hominids competed with hyenas for such scraps before sabre-tooths died out in East Africa 1.5 million years ago.
